At Academy, student instructor of physics, 2257-58, and basic starship piloting, 2258-59. In 2258, served midshipman cruise on U.S.S. Lexington as relief helm officer. Returned to Starfleet Academy with highest-level flight credentials ever held by a third-year cadet.
After Academy, in 2259 posted to U.S.S. Tullahoma as ship's physicist and relief helm officer. In 2263, promoted to lieutenant, junior grade after publication of paper ("Experimental Subparticle Physics and Their Application to Warp Drive"). In 2265, transferred to U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701) as ship's senior physicist. In 2266, promoted to lieutenant, designated chief helm officer, 2266. Served with distinction.
In 2271, embarked on second five-year mission aboard Enterprise under command of Captain Kirk. Promoted to lieutenant commander, 2272. Returned from second five-year mission, 2276.
From 2277 to 2285, served as senior instructor of starship piloting at Starfleet Academy. Also taught warp physics and off-campus extension courses in piloting vintage aircraft. Promoted to commander, 2283.
While serving as piloting instructor aboard Enterprise during training mission in 2285, Admiral Kirk assumed command to deal with the Genesis Crisis. At Kirk's request, Sulu returned to active duty as chief helm officer.
In 2285, Sulu assisted Kirk in theft of Enterprise from spacedock. Subsequently fled with Kirk et al. to Vulcan. In 2286, Returned to Earth in stolen Klingon bird-of-prey, and participated in time-travel mission to rescue Earth from alien probe of unknown origin. In 2286, cleared of all Federation charges and returned to active duty by the Federation Council, 2286.
In 2290, took command of U.S.S. Excelsior. Completed three-year mission cataloging gaseous anomalies in Beta Quadrant, 2293. Played a pivotal role with Kirk and others during Khitomer Peace Conference by preventing Klingon agitators from violently disrupting the conference.
During the 2293 Khitomer incident, undertook unsuccessful attempt to rescue Kirk and Dr. Leonard McCoy from Klingon prison on Rura Penthe; narrowly escaped Klingon patrol in Azure Nebula led by Klingon commander Kang. Sulu later ordered this encounter omitted from Excelsior's official mission log.
As of 2350, Captain Sulu, age 113, was still on active patrol on the Cardassian border.
